tested on XP Sp2 only
Ok, so you would like to change your start menu button text to anything you like.
It is very easy.
In this tutorial, we will need this tool. "ResHack".
You can download this over the internet. Just Google it or if you're lazy enough not to do that. Just click the download link below.
Now you have it.
It's a very useful tool not just for this tutorial.
Let's get started.
1. Run ResHack.
2. Open windows explorer.exe. (you can find it in C:\Windows\explorer.exe or any drive where you put your windows folder ).
3. Click String Table in the tree list.
4. Expand it. Look for string 37. Again, expand it.
5. Click 1033. Now you see in the right side. Edit the text between the qoutes in the line 578. By default, it has the value "start" as it displays in your start menu button.
6. Change it to whatever you like.
7. Save As it in your windows folder. Do not use Save. Use Save As. Save it having a different name. like instead of explorer.exe you'll use explorer_modified.exe or whatsoever.
(note: it's better to always backup system files before trying to modify it. another thing. String 37 is for users who use the XP layout. If you're using the classic layout, choose String 38. and line 595.)
To the registry.
Now you have already a modified explorer.exe we can now proceed to editing the registry.
8. Open your registry editor again. Start> run .. type in "regedit" (without the qoutes of course).
9. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon
10. Locate Shell in the right side, and then double click it. Change it's value from Explorer.exe to the name of the modified explorer.exe you did. Just like from our example a while ago. explorer_modified.exe or whatsoever again.
11. Exit Registry editor. And restart, or logout your computer. Then see the results.
If you failed to notice the changes, take this action:
-Change both the text "start" in Strings 37 and 38. and follow the steps again.
Hope you will get it at your first try!..
